Scholastism's End

Those old schoolmen once contended
How their church doctrines were true.
They spilt much ink for this passion
Yet every letter cost them that desire.

That world has been replaced by the new
Their church doctrines have gathered dust
They are recorded as footnotes to history
And no memory of their desire remains.

Was this a tragedy or an empty story?
It was tragic, for their desire was divine.
It was empty, for their ways were mundane.
If only there were schoolmen now to clarify.
